Senator Bartolomé Abdala confirmed LLA's intention to change sick leave rules, despite the controversial point about reducing payments being removed. He emphasized the importance of combating abuses in this area.

Argentine Senator Insists on Sick Leave Reform

Senator for La Libertad Avanza (LLA) and provisional President of the Senate, Bartolomé Abdala, assured that they will insist on changing sick leave. He also pointed out that this topic is 'somewhat less extensive and less generous' than the labor modernization project presented by the national government. 'It is true that article treated serious illnesses in some different way, so it was eliminated,' the senator said. 'There are fake medical certificates and something must be done,' he added. The controversy had arisen during the debate, when article 44 of the project, which announced salary cuts linked to the illnesses that workers might face, was discussed. That point proposed to reduce the payment of salaries during sick leave by 50% or 75%, depending on the severity of the condition; this topic generated wide social and union rejection, and even dialogist blocs (like PRO and UCR) pressured to withdraw the point due to the political cost it implied. Finally, LLA decided to eliminate said article, while article 208 of the Labor Contract Law, which guarantees the payment of 100% of the remuneration during medical licenses, remains in force. However, the libertarian stated in an interview with Infobae that 'in no way is the law that will be sanctioned on Friday of lesser importance.' In the same vein, he indicated that 'as the ordinary period progresses, there will be a new law that will come to correct that issue' because for LLA it is of the utmost importance to cut with exaggerated and abusive leaves, such as those 'they suffer so much in the private sector as in the public sector'.
